Northern Lights is growing series of graded piano music by Canadian composers with each level consisting of two collections: a repertoire and a musical discoveries book. These collections are designed to inspire, educate and appeal to all students. The series is listed in festivals across the country. A Pre-Reader through to Level Eight of Northern Lights have already been completed, as well as volumes of duet books at various levels.

Northern Lights Pre-Reader
Children can now play ‘cool’ Canadian compositions at their first piano lesson. The Northern Lights Pre-Reader progresses through natural processing. Northern Lights Pre-Reader is a great supplemental book for all methods of study. Students move easily through works without notation to simple notational reading while developing keyboard direction and orientation, as well as right hand – left hand designation. Young pianists are encouraged to use their voices by singing appealing lyrics while enhancing their rhythmic playing. Northern Lights Pre-Reader is a fun, ‘must-have’ repertoire book for all beginning students!

Northern Lights Primer 1
Northern Light Primer 1 is sequential to the Pre-Reader. Released in July of 2012, this collection offers 29 new Canadian piano solos and improvisations for beginning piano students. Biographies and photos of the 15 contributing composers are included, as well as 'Creative Corners' for performance and pedagogy ideas.

Northern Lights Primer 2
Northern Lights Primer 2 completes the elementary levels of this wonderful series of Canadian works. Released in July of 2013, this collections includes 39 solos and improvisations by 21 Canadian composers. Photos, biographies and pedagogy ideas are included.

Northern Lights Pre A
Northern Lights: An Exploration of Canadian Piano Music Level Pre A is a collection of Pre-Grade One repertoire written by Canadian composers. The 33 pieces were carefully selected to represent a wide variety of keys, metre, tempi and styles. They range from majestic and traditional King Tiger to the gentle Kitty on the Keys; from the gigantic Hippo to the tiny Butterfly. Styles range from traditional to contemporary to jazz. The collection is a useful resource of repertoire for examination, performance, quick study, sight reading and fun, as well useful glossaries. Northern Lights: An

Northern Lights Level 9 Repertoire & Etudes
Northern Lights Canadian National Conservatory of Music is pleased to continue its progressive series Northern Lights – An Exploration of Canadian Piano Music with this Level 9 collection which includes both Repertoire and Etudes. CNCM is indeed proud to give Canadian composers a voice with these publications as well as to educate and share Canadian repertoire with advancing performers. Twenty-two talented Canadian composers from coast to coast have contributed twenty-two appealing pieces for Level 9 Repertoire and Etudes.
Several pieces have been identified in the table of contents as etudes, for examination purposes. This collection is useful as a resource for a variety of functions and levels: Canadian content for festivals, recitals, examinations, sight reading, quick study, and supplemental material. To facilitate the learning process, fingerings and measure numbers have been included. Metronome markings are suggested tempi. Photos of the composers are included with the biographies as well as program notes for each piece.
The compositions are written in a wide variety of moods and styles. In addition, there is a substantial range of difficulty within this level to accommodate all capabilities. In the selection process, consideration was given to style, skill level, variety of metre, tonality, and pedagogical features. The result is a delightful assortment of pieces for the 21st century musician by Canadian composers who inspire the imagination of both performer and audience.
