Grade Nine Harmony
Co-requisite for Grade Nine Practical Exams Examination Length: 3 Hours
Grade Nine Harmony is a natural progression from the CNCM Rudiment program. In addition to all rudiment information, topics include:
Chorale style writing utilizing figured bass, all triads and inversions, dominant sevenths with inversions and appropriate resolutions, the supertonic seventh, six-four chords (passing, and cadential), secondary seventh chords and identification of the diminished seventh chord;
Non chord notes;
Keyboard styling writing;
Two-part counterpoint; and
Structural and harmonic analysis.
Grade Ten Harmony
Co-requisite for Grade Ten Practical Exams Examination Options:
One 3 Hour Examination; OR
Three 1.5 Hour Examinations as follows:
Part 1: Harmony
Part 2: Counterpoint
Part 3: Analysis
All three 1.5 hour examinations MUST be completed within FIVE consecutive examination sessions and EACH MUST earn a minimum of 60% for option B.
Grade Ten Harmony requires all rudiment and Grade Nine Harmony information. New topics include:
Chorale style writing;
Keyboard style writing;
Dominant ninth and thirteenth chords;
Diatonic sevenths;
Secondary sevenths;
Diminished seventh chords;
Six-four chords (arpeggio and appoggiatura);
Modulations;
Two-part counterpoint; and
Structural and harmonic analysis.
Associate Harmony
Co-requisite for Associate Practical Exams Examination Options:
One 3 Hour Examination OR
Two 1.5 Hour Examinations as follows:
Part 1: Harmony
Part 2: Counterpoint
Both 1.5 hour examinations MUST be written within THREE consecutive examination sessions and BOTH MUST earn a minimum of 60% for option B.
Associate Harmony requires all rudiment, Grade Nine and Grade Ten Harmony information. New topics include:
Chorale style writing;
Keyboard style writing;
Augments sixth chords;
Neapolitan chords;
Secondary diminished seventh chords;
Half diminished chords;
Chromatic chords;
Two-part counterpoint; and
Invertible counterpoint
Associate Analysis
Co-requisite for Associate Practical Exams Examination Length: 3 Hours
Associate Analysis requires all rudiment, Grade Nine and Grade Ten information. Topics include:
Rondo form
Lieder;
All scale types including modern scales and modes;
