WHAT'S NEW

New Northern Lights Video Series: Winter

Be sure to adjust the settings to 720p for best viewing results.
For the past few months Northern Lights Canadian National Conservatory of Music has been working on a new and exciting YouTube project. The pieces in the first series of videos are 'Winter' themed works written by Canadian composers. The piano solos are drawn from the CNCM Northern Lights, Making Tracks and Folksong series.

"First Snow" by Martha Hill Duncan is a charming character piece with Impressionistic qualities. The interesting harmonies, use of harmonic 5ths, wash of pedal and toccata passages create an ethereal work sure to enchant any audience.

Check out previous videos in the series.

The video also features the debut of a fantastic (and very catchy) new CNCM theme by Wes Froese and a message from Dale Donaldson on behalf of the CNCM Board.

Look for more Northern Lights videos in our 'winter' theme over the coming weeks!

2020 Spring Practical Examination Announcement

Hope you are well as we travel these uncharted waters of Covid-19.

As you can appreciate, we are having to make changes to how we conduct our business. CNCM has been conducting online examinations for many years now, servicing remote communities, smaller centres and special needs situations. We have been extremely successful with these sessions with protocol and format already well organized so that CNCM examinations are user friendly and stress free.

CNCM is moving ALL spring examinations to our online format to ensure that children are able to meet their musical goals and have a continuous and purposeful plan of study. CNCM wishes to share a message of calm and normalcy with our teachers and students; while it may not be quite “business as usual”, with our planned accommodations students will continue to have opportunities for success, which will be ‘music to our ears’.

The following list may assist with process – please share with your families to create a positive experience for all:
  1. Audiences may need to be restricted for performance examinations. This number will be based on provincial and national guidelines, as well as availability of space to accommodate physical distancing.
  2. Centres may be set-up within teachers' studios – once again based on provincial and national Covid-19 guidelines. CNCM administration will work with teachers to determine the best plan for location of examinations.
  3. CNCM will supply both teachers and students with appropriate protocol.
  4. CNCM will offer flexible sessions/centres keeping physical contact to a minimum based on provincial and national
    Covid-19 guidelines.

CNCM acknowledges that live performances are always our first choice, but meeting goals is equally important and online exams make this possible.

CNCM Principal
