Mary Hawn enjoys a life in music, and a musical life. Mary was delighted to return to studio life, subsequent to stepping down as the Director of the Preparatory Studies Division of the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, a position she held from 2006-2013.
She has enjoyed diverse music positions which naturally led to studies culminating in an ARCT in Composition. During twenty years as a worship place musician, Mary was organist/pianist and choir & music director. These positions also variously involved conducting instrumental ensembles from recorder to African drums, as well as the requisite music arranging. For seventeen successive years, she also enjoyed being arranger and organist for the performing duo “Take Two for Organ and Trumpet.”
Her original compositions performed include choral works “Christ is our Sufficiency”; “Sing and Rejoice, the Third Day is Dawning”; “Be Quiet, Stand Still”; “Even the Raven”; “Hope and Vanguards”; “Peace, Not a Trifle”; “ Immanent Love on Advent Morning”; and many more!
Her background also includes Suzuki Piano SAA Registration, Levels 1 through 6, an Orff Teacher’s Certificate, and Kodaly, Level 1. Mary holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (English & Music), University of Manitoba, a Certificate of Education (Silver Medal: Speech and Drama), Brandon University, and an Activities: Program Development and Service Certificate, Red River College.
In 2013, Mary was honoured to receive an “Outstanding Teacher Award” from the University of Manitoba, for her significant contribution to excellence in teaching. Mary maintains an active piano studio in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is on the executive of MRMTA.
