Summer Sizzle Yorkton 2014
What a delightful two days of workshops, showcases, concerts, master classes, premieres and musical camaraderie! Summer Sizzle Keyboard Kamp and Piano Pedagogy Symposium Yorkton (August 18 & 19) was a huge success from all perspectives.
Keyboard Kamp was filled to capacity with students (ages 6 -18) attending from Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Our visiting Canadian composers loved working with these budding musicians – creating educational and performance opportunities, as well as musical memories and experiences which will last a lifetime. All Keyboard Kampers were very fortunate to develop their improvisational skills and jazz knowledge while working with Saskatoon composer and performer, Wes Froese – great fun!
Teachers shared in professional development sessions on topics from Rhythm to Business – Yoga and Reading – definitely something for every music studio. The showcases of new music were a smorgasbord of talent and inspiration: hearing new works by Rémi Bouchard (MB), Lynette Sawatsky (SK), Joyce Pinckney (AB), Teresa Richert (BC), Martha Hill Duncan (ON), Ernst Schneider (BC), Jennifer Lanthier (ON), Diane Hunter (MB) and many more – often performed by the attending composer. What an amazing opportunity!
Parents and grandparents also shared in the musical experience, many travelling with their children from out of province. The Shoo Chopin recital of original student compositions and the Canadian Jazz Concert performed by students became highlights of the event. Summer Sizzle was capped off with the traditional Summer Sizzle Gala and Dinner. Visiting composers had their work featured, CNCM graduates and award winners were honoured, and our very own Honorary Licentiate, Ernst Schneider, provided a motivating and heartfelt key-note speech.
Summer Sizzle is historical – a one of a kind event in Canada. Where else does one find 18 Canadian composers under one roof sharing and working with teachers, students and their families? Summer Sizzle Yorkton 2014 truly touched our musical souls and energized all who attended! Thanks Saskatchewan!
