Prior Learning & Assessment Recognition
CNCM is working with ministries in provinces across Canada regarding high school credits.
Ontario:
CNCM is continuing the pursuit of high school credits with the Ontario Ministry of Education. Currently, CNCM students may earn their high school credit under PLAR. Ontario students should contact the Office of the Registrar to recevie the necessary support to pursue thiscredit.
What is PLAR?
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), as set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education:
- PLAR is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process.
- PLAR allows students to obtain credits for prior learning in various disciplines.
- PLAR includes knowledge and skills students have learned in formal (classroom instruction).
- PLAR includes knowledge and skills students have learned in informal ways (non-classroom).
- PLAR allows these skills and areas of knowledge to be assessed against criteria set out in the provincial curriculum policy documents.
- PLAR assessments allow credits to be awarded towards a secondary school diploma.
Memorandum No. 129 and Private Music Credits
- Grade seven practical and the corresponding theory for ONE non Grade twelve university/college preparation credit towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma in addition to any other non-grade twelve university/college preparation music credits earned in the school.
- Grade eight and the corresponding theory for ONE Grade twelve university/college preparation credit towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma in addition to a maximum of ONE other Grade twelve university/college preparation music credit earned in the school.
- Grade nine or higher practical and theoretical achievement can also be used to apply for "PLAR"
How to achieve your music credit under PLAR:
- Prepare documentation of your successfully completed Canadian National Conservatory of Music practical and corresponding theoretical examination results.
- Provide a copy of the Canadian National Conservatory of Music practical and corresponding theoretical credit requirements.
- Present this documentation to your Secondary School guidance counselor and/or principal.
- Request that your music credit be granted under PLAR.
- Contact Canadian National Conservatory of Music for necessary support and information.
Northern Lights Canadian National Conservatory of Music Programs:
- Practical piano examinations for pre-grade one through associate levels.
- Recital performance examinations with family and friends in attendance.
- Workshop examinations including lesson/workshop with the examiner.
- Private musicianship examinations with enriched skills.
- Partial examinations for a more balanced work load
