A History - Our Publications
Northern Lights Canadian National Conservatory of Music is the first conservatory in Canada to invite major national composers to write music to be published exclusively for young Canadian piano students in a graded series of books. The “Northern Lights” series provides piano students with pre-grade one pieces (premièred 2006) up to the current Grade 5 level books that premièred the summer of 2009. Also, two volumes of “Making Tracks” was the fruit of several composers across Canada to honour the rail history of our Country. A further volume of “Making Tracks” was produced containing advanced pieces for two pianos. The series concluded with two volumes based on “Small Town Canada” themes. A piano performance/workshop syllabus is available as well as an elementary/primary pedagogy syllabus and several handbooks to go along with the completion of the various pedagogy diplomas. The CNCM Piano Syllabus and Piano Pedagogy Syllabus has also been in print since 2003.
CNCM continues to grow, not only in student enrolment, but also with new and innovative programs and projects. The CNCM Composers & Kids program allows music students in different centres to meet and work with a currently active Canadian composer. Such interaction is tremendously inspiring to young and older musicians alike and has proven successful across Canada.
CNCM’s newest programs, Northern Lights Music for Everyone, were launched in the summer of 2009. These programs were designed to meet the needs of busy families from the young to the young at heart students; students who may be between grades, students needing a goal, students wishing to be more functional in general – truly – music for everyone. The programs are available in two streams: Star Performance and Popular.
CNCM continues to grow and develop new programs – thinking and reaching beyond traditional programs. CNCM is building and developing current programs for today’s music students.
